Day Trips from Umdloti

Umdloti sits close enough to the rest of KZN’s North Coast and Durban’s northern suburbs that most of the region’s best-known stops are under half an hour away. This page runs through the closest first.

Every drive time on this page is an estimate rather than a sourced figure, unless it carries a dated stats-table source above. Each estimate is built from Umdloti’s confirmed position on the coastal road relative to the other towns and attractions named. Where a real number exists, such as the airport distance or the Umdloti-to-Ballito distance, it is called out explicitly. Everywhere else, treat the minutes given as a working guide to plan around, not a promise.

Umhlanga promenade and Gateway

Umhlanga’s beachfront promenade, roughly a mile and a half of walkway lined with cafes and restaurants and anchored by the landmark Whalebone Pier, sits an estimated 10-15 minutes south of Umdloti. No source timed this specific leg. The estimate comes from the roughly 10-11 km road distance between the two. Gateway Theatre of Shopping, one of the country’s larger malls, sits alongside Umhlanga and is a common add-on to the same trip.

Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom

About 10-15 minutes from Umdloti, Sibaya Casino is a Zulu-kraal-inspired complex with a casino floor, two hotels and a 577-seat theatre, run by Sun International. It sits inside the wider Sibaya Precinct development, so a Sibaya day or evening trip doubles as a look at the North Coast’s biggest current construction story.

Hawaan Forest

An ancient dune forest between the Ohlanga River and the sea, about 15 minutes from Umdloti, with a roughly 2km walking trail, wooden bridges, and sightings of fish eagles and the occasional red duiker. It is one of the few formal walking trails in reach of Umdloti itself, which has no dedicated hiking trail of its own beyond its beachfront promenade.

KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board

Headquartered in Umhlanga, about 15 minutes from Umdloti, the Sharks Board runs public shark-research tours and shark-net education sessions, and doubles as an event venue. It is a natural add-on for anyone who has read about the shark nets protecting Umdloti’s own beach.

The Litchi Orchard Market

On Seaforth Avenue, roughly 20 minutes north, this farm and artisan market used to run on the first and third Saturday of every month, 08:00 to 13:00, with around 30 stallholders selling bread, produce and prepared food. In October 2026 the Litchi Orchard’s own site says it is renovating, with “The New Litchi Orchard” coming soon, and it lists no market dates. Don’t plan a day trip around the market until it announces one on its own site or social pages.

Ballito

About 22 km north of Umdloti (Umdloti to Ballito), roughly a 20-25 minute drive, Ballito is the bigger, more commercial North Coast town, with more retail and dining than Umdloti itself. Sala Beach House, Shaka’s Rock

Just north of Ballito, at 75 Ocean Drive, Thompson’s Bay, Shaka’s Rock, about 26 km and 24 minutes from Umdloti. Sala Beach House is a five-star hotel that takes day guests, so this is the day trip for a long lunch rather than a walk.

Lunch is by reservation only, a three-course set menu at R695 a head when checked in September 2026, with dinner at R795. Sala Beach Spa books treatments alongside it, so lunch and a massage can be one booking made twice. Ring 032 492 0420, email the restaurant and the spa separately, and book the treatment well ahead because the spa asks for notice. Day guests are asked not to take photographs.

Tongaat

Further north again, past Ballito, Tongaat is a sugar-producing town and home to South Africa’s oldest Indian community, dating to the first indentured labourers who settled there in 1860 to work the cane fields. Its landmark is the Juggernathi Puri Temple, built in 1920 in North Indian architectural style and now a national monument. No sourced drive time from Umdloti to Tongaat was found for this page. Ballito sits at about 22km, and Tongaat is the next town north past it. Estimate 30-40 minutes. It’s a guide, not a sourced figure.

Durban’s Golden Mile and uShaka Marine World

Durban’s Golden Mile beachfront and uShaka Marine World, the city’s marine theme park, sit south of Umdloti via the N2 or the older M4 coast road. No independently sourced drive time was found for this page; a reasonable working estimate is 25-35 minutes depending on traffic, longer at peak times through the city.

Planning which trips to combine

Sibaya Casino, Hawaan Forest and the Sharks Board all sit close enough together, roughly 10-15 minutes from Umdloti and only a short drive from each other. A single day can realistically cover two of the three without feeling rushed. Ballito and Tongaat, further north on the same road, pair naturally with each other rather than with the southern options. A day trip north is best kept separate from a day trip toward Durban, rather than trying to cover both directions in one outing. The Litchi Orchard Market is the one fixed-schedule stop on this page, running only the first and third Saturday of the month. It is worth checking the calendar before building a day around it, rather than assuming it is open whenever you happen to drive past.

Anyone without a hire car should weight this list toward the closer options. Sibaya, Hawaan Forest and the Sharks Board are all realistic Uber trips given their short distance from Umdloti. Ballito, Tongaat and Durban are longer legs, better suited to a rental car or a pre-booked transfer.
