Umdloti Surf

Umdloti is an exposed beach break backed by a series of reefs, producing barrelling peaks and a right-hand point break. It rewards surfers who watch the swell and wind instead of just turning up, and locals rate June the most consistent month.

What it is and where

The break sits straight off Umdloti Beach, fully exposed to ocean swell with no headland or reef offshore to soften it. That exposure gives it size and shape. The reef underneath produces a series of peaks, including the right-hand point break that is the spot’s signature wave. Waves range from waist-high to double overhead depending on the swell, and sections can hold up to 150 m, so you get longer rides than on a typical closeout beach break.

Conditions and best time

The wave wants offshore wind, which on this stretch of coast means a westerly, and a swell from the south or south-east to line the reefs up. Low to mid tide usually gives the cleanest shape. June is rated the most consistent month, with clean conditions roughly 44% of the time against 37% blown out, thanks to that month’s more reliable offshore wind. Crowds and skill level

Umdloti is rarely crowded compared with more built-up North Coast surf spots, which is part of its appeal for surfers who already know it. With waves from waist-high to double overhead, it can work for a spread of ability levels. The break is exposed and has reef sections, though. If you haven’t surfed it before, go with a local guide or take a lesson, and don’t paddle out solo as a beginner.

Safety

Sharks have been sighted in this surf zone, which is one reason the KZN Sharks Board maintains protective nets roughly 400 m offshore along Umdloti’s coast. In July 2025 a hoax press release, built on a cloned website, falsely claimed those nets would be swapped for an “electromagnetic barrier.” The real Sharks Board denied it, and it was traced to a fake domain. No such project exists.

A reef-backed beach break also brings hazards that open-sand breaks don’t: rock and reef contact, especially at lower tides. Check conditions and ask for local knowledge before you surf an unfamiliar section.

What to bring

Bring a board suited to the wave range you’re chasing, reef-safe wax if you surf in the warmer months, and a rash vest or wetsuit for the season.
