Whales and Dolphins at Umdloti

Umdloti’s coastline sits on a whale and dolphin migration route. On an ordinary day you can spot dolphins off the sand, and from July to November the same water carries whales moving up and down the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

What you can see, and when

Dolphins are the most reliable sighting. Pods are a regular, more or less year-round presence offshore, and you can see them from the beach on plenty of mornings without any special timing. Whales are the seasonal event. Southern right whales move along this coast from about July to the end of the year, with calving and sightings clustering later in that window. Humpback whales migrate up the KZN coast over a similar stretch of months. A third seasonal event overlaps with whale season: the sardine run. It usually runs May to July and peaks around June. Umdloti sits on the run’s northward path up from the Eastern Cape, but the headline sardine-run destinations are the South Coast and Eastern Cape further south, where the run is at its most concentrated. Umdloti gets the knock-on activity the sardines draw: dolphins, bronze whaler sharks, gannets diving in numbers, gamefish including tuna, and the larger whales themselves.

Where to look from shore

You don’t need a boat for any of this. Umdloti Beach and the tidal pool both work as shore viewing spots in whale season, because the animals pass close enough to the coastline to see with the naked eye. Binoculars help. Early morning tends to bring calmer water and better visibility for spotting a blow or a breach further out.

Safety

Sardine-run and whale-season activity both draw predators, sharks included. That’s part of the normal seasonal picture on this stretch of coast, and these months carry no special hazard of their own. The KZN Sharks Board’s nets, roughly 400 m offshore, stay in place year-round. If you’ll be in the water during these months, treat it as a normal Umdloti swim with slightly more marine-life activity, and follow the same net-zone and lifeguard guidance as on any other visit. What to bring

Bring binoculars if you have them, plus a hat and sun protection, since a shore watch can run longer than a normal beach visit.
