Whales and Dolphins at Umdloti

Umdloti’s coastline is a working stretch of migration route, not just a beach. Dolphins turn up off the sand on an ordinary day, and from July to November the same water carries whales moving up and down the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

What you can see, and when

Dolphins are the most reliable sighting: pods are a regular, effectively year-round presence just offshore, visible from the beach on plenty of mornings without any special timing. Whales are the seasonal event. Southern right whales move along this coast broadly from July through the year’s end, with calving and sightings clustering later in that window, while humpback whales migrate up the KZN coast over a similar stretch of months. A third seasonal event overlaps with the tail end of whale season: the sardine run, typically running May to July with activity usually peaking around June. Umdloti sits on the run’s northward path up from the Eastern Cape, but it is not the headline sardine-run destination; that reputation belongs to the South Coast and Eastern Cape further south, where the run is at its most concentrated. What Umdloti does get is the knock-on activity the sardines draw: dolphins, bronze whaler sharks, gannets diving in numbers, and gamefish including tuna and the larger whales themselves.

Where to look from shore

No boat is required for any of this. Both Umdloti Beach and the tidal pool are used as shore-based viewing spots during whale season, since the animals pass close enough to the coastline to be visible with the naked eye, and binoculars help. Early morning tends to give calmer water and better visibility for spotting a blow or a breach further out.

Safety

Sardine-run and whale-season activity both draw predators, sharks included, which is part of the normal seasonal picture on this stretch of coast rather than a special hazard specific to these months. The KZN Sharks Board’s nets, positioned roughly 400 m offshore, run year-round regardless of season.
