Things to Do in Umdloti

The main beach, the tidal pool and the beachfront restaurants sit a short walk apart, so a day here needs no plan.

Below is everything in the village, counted honestly. Three beaches, five ways to use the water, five places to get coffee, six places to eat without moving your car, and the ten shops and restaurants at Marine Walk a short drive away. That is twenty-nine. Every entry links to its own page with the address, the hours and where those came from.

Two things this page will not do. It will not pad the count with attractions in Umhlanga and Durban, and it will not list an activity nobody actually offers.

The three beaches, and which to pick

Umdloti Beach is the main strand, at the mouth of the Mdloti River. It is shark-netted and lifeguarded in peak season. It does not hold a KZN Blue Flag for 2025/26, and water quality has moved around, so read the dated notices before you swim.

The tidal pool is the natural rock pool on the beachfront, popular with families. Low tide exposes more of the rock structure. Check the tide, the signs and the lifeguards on the day.

Selection Beach is the quiet third option. One source describes it as dog friendly and wheelchair accessible; confirm both on arrival rather than assuming them.

Five ways to use the water

Surfing. An exposed beach break backed by reefs, with a right-hand point. It works best on an offshore westerly and a south or south-east swell.

Kitesurfing. September to April is the consistent stretch, with NNE through south-westerly wind averaging 10 to 25 knots. That window is open now.

Fishing. Rated among the better spots on the North Coast, worked from the shore, from ski-boats and from kayaks and paddle-skis.

The lagoon and estuary. When the river breaks through to the sea after rain it forms a wide, sheltered lagoon, lined with mangrove and worked by resident fish eagles. Go for the birds and the quiet. Nobody hires out boards or boats here, whatever the listing sites say, and it is unpatrolled.

Whales and dolphins, from the sand. Dolphins are a year-round sighting off this coast. Whale season runs roughly July to November as southern rights and humpbacks pass on the migration, so September is inside it. Sightings are a bonus, never a booking.

Bring your own gear. No business in the village was found hiring out surfboards, kites, paddleboards or kayaks. Surf Motel at 16 South Beach Road is self-catering accommodation positioned for all three, not an outfitter, and its facilities are for its own guests.

Coffee and breakfast, all walkable

Seattle Coffee trades from the beachfront unit at Umdloti Centre, 1 South Beach Road.

FOAM at 31 North Beach Road opens at 06:30 and runs to 16:00, seven days, and rates 4 out of 5 on Tripadvisor.

Dolores Cafe is the small kiosk on the corner of South Beach Road and Margaret Bacon Avenue, busy with locals from sunrise to lunchtime.

Salt & Citrus at Umdloti Beach Centre is the sit-down breakfast with the sea in front of it.

The Umdloti Community Space above Victory Surf Shop is coffee, snacks and an ocean-view desk, founded by Deon Bosman and open to the public since its 2026 soft launch. Check current hours before relying on it for a working morning.

Six places to eat without moving the car

Bel Punto. Family-run Italian and seafood with a large terrace and uninterrupted ocean views, open daily 12:00 to 21:00. Ask for a sea-facing table when you book.

SandBar. A 90-seat casual restaurant and 20-seat cocktail bar at 32 North Beach Road, about 20 m from the sand, open every day 11:00 to 22:00.

Bush Tavern. The beachfront pub and grill at 1 South Beach Road, and the place to watch sport in the village. Confirm your fixture is being screened.

Mozambik. Peri-peri chicken, prawns and Mozambican-Portuguese seafood at 1 Jabu Ngcobo Drive.

Tasca Pizza. Portuguese-owned, at 31 North Beach Road, with thin-base pizzas, pastas and tapas.

The Barn at Bellamont Stables. A rustic country restaurant at 100 Sugar Cane Road, listed as Wednesday to Sunday for breakfast and lunch and rated 5 out of 5 on Tripadvisor. Its current trading status is unconfirmed, so phone ahead.

Marine Walk, a short drive inland

Marine Walk Shopping Centre at Salta Sibaya is a separate trip from the beachfront, by car or taxi, not part of the walking circuit. It holds ten of the entries on this page.

Eat at Tightline, a seafood retailer by day and a seafood bar and grill by night, Tyler’s, a steakhouse with its own butchery at Shop 24b/c, or La Casa Nostra, a family-run Italian trattoria trading since 1996. Waxy O’Connors at Shop 05b is the Irish pub and the other sport option. For something quicker there is Mugg & Bean, Milky Lane for waffles and milkshakes, and Kauai at Shop 25A.

For a self-catering stay, SUPERSPAR Salta is the supermarket and Woolworths W.Edit at Shop 01 was the first store of that format in KwaZulu-Natal. Dis-Chem at Shop 11 is the pharmacy, and the closest one to the village.

When it rains

A wet day is the day to use the car, and the best use of it is north.

Sala Beach House is the one to book. Lunch and a spa treatment there turns a washed-out afternoon into the part of the trip people talk about afterwards. It is a five-star hotel at 75 Ocean Drive, Thompson’s Bay, Shaka’s Rock, about 26 km and 24 minutes up the coast, just north of Ballito. Day guests are welcome for lunch by reservation only, on a three-course set menu at R695 a head when checked in September 2026, and Sala Beach Spa takes treatment bookings alongside it. Ring 032 492 0420, and email the spa and the restaurant separately. Book the treatment well ahead, because the spa asks for notice, and note that day guests are asked not to take photographs.

If you did not plan that far, Gateway is about 20 minutes south in Umhlanga: an 18-screen Nu Metro cinema, which took over the old Ster-Kinekor space and opened in October 2025 with South Africa’s first ScreenX, plus over 380 shops and around 90 restaurants. A whole afternoon disappears there without any planning at all.

Closer in, Marine Walk puts ten shops and restaurants under one roof, ten minutes away. Sibaya is a similar distance, and its dining directory lists more, including Thava and Beira Alta.

If you would rather not drive at all, take longer over a meal on the beachfront, or use the community space above Victory Surf Shop for coffee and a desk with a view of the weather.

The lagoon fills after heavy rain, so the day after a downpour is the day to walk up and look at it.

Check any list before you drive to it

Places that other Umdloti lists still recommend have closed. Mundo Vida appears on more than one of them and is gone; its unit is now an Indian restaurant (confirmed locally). So are Caffe Java, Manta Cafe and Selections Cafe, whose beachfront units are now Salt & Citrus and Seattle Coffee. Those pages stay up here with the evidence, because a closed restaurant is worth knowing about before you park outside it.

Lists promising far more than this are usually counting Umhlanga and Durban. uShaka Marine World and Gateway are real and worth a day, and they are 20 to 25 km away, which is why they sit under rainy days and day trips from Umdloti rather than in the count. The same goes for activities. A lagoon described as a paddleboarding spot by three listing sites, with no operator and nobody on the water, is a line copied between directories rather than something you can turn up and do.
