Low tide shows the most rock-pool life. The tide alone does not make the water safe to swim, so check the lifeguards and their flags. Times are predicted from an ocean tide model checked against Durban tide tables, usually within 10 minutes. Not for navigation.

The Umdloti Tidal Pool is a natural rock pool on Umdloti Beach, popular for a relaxed beach visit when conditions allow.

What it is and where

The pool forms around a natural rocky shelf, and water moves in and out as sea conditions change. Use the map and local signs to find the pool and the designated swimming area. Watch your footing, because the rocky edges can be slippery and uneven.

Safety

Before you get in, check current notices and ask the lifeguards about conditions. Don’t assume the pool is free of currents, that a calm surface means safe swimming, or that a lifeguard tower is staffed. Keep young children within arm’s reach.

Follow NSRI’s advice: swim where lifeguards are on duty and between their flags. Nothing on record shows this pool is the safest or lowest shark-risk swimming spot in Umdloti.

Low tide can expose more of the rock structure, which makes it a good time to look for marine life. Keep clear of wave-washed rocks. What to bring

Reef shoes are worth the small hassle. The rock floor is uneven and can be sharp in places, and bare feet make exploring the shallower rock-pool sections uncomfortable. Bring your own snorkel gear if you want it, because there’s no known hire at the pool itself. Beach parking cost and capacity aren’t known, so don’t plan around a guaranteed free bay.
