Fishing at Umdloti
Umdloti is rated among the better recreational fishing spots on the KZN North Coast, worked from the shore, by ski-boat and from kayaks or paddle-skis. Target species range from couta and dorado to kingfish and rock cod, with sardine-run season from May to July bringing an extra pulse of activity.

Kitesurfing at Umdloti
Umdloti is a recognised North Coast kitesurfing and windsurfing spot, at its best from September to April with steady NNE to south-westerly winds averaging 10 to 25 knots. The river-mouth lagoon offers flat water alongside the wave-riding done off the main beach.

Umdloti Beach
Umdloti Beach is a shark-netted swimming beach on Umdloti's main strand, at the mouth of the Mdloti River. It is not on the KZN Blue Flag list for 2025/26, and its water quality has swung between clean and poor readings through the second half of 2025.

Selection Beach, Umdloti
Selection Beach is one of Umdloti's three named beach spots alongside the main beach and the tidal pool. It is described in one source as dog friendly and wheelchair accessible, though that has not been independently confirmed.

Umdloti Surf
Umdloti is an exposed beach break backed by a series of reefs, with a right-hand point break, working best on offshore westerly winds and a south or south-east swell. June is rated the most consistent month for clean waves.

Umdloti Tidal Pool
The Umdloti Tidal Pool is a large natural rock pool at the south end of Umdloti Beach, sheltered from the surf and currents that make the open beach riskier. It has its own lifeguard tower and is the spot most families head for first.

Whales and Dolphins at Umdloti
Dolphins are a common year-round sighting just off Umdloti's coast, and whale season runs roughly July to November as southern right and humpback whales pass on their KZN migration. No boat is needed; the beach and tidal pool are both regular viewing spots.

Umdloti Lagoon and River Estuary
The Umdloti River forms a wide, sheltered lagoon at its mouth when it breaks through to the sea after rain. It is Umdloti's flat-water spot for paddleboarding, canoeing and kitesurfing, and home to mangrove, fish eagles and waterfowl.
