Beach and outdoors in Umdloti

Umdloti is a short stretch of coast with a lot in it: the main beach, a tidal pool cut into the rocks, a river mouth and a point that works on a winter swell. Each one has its own page, with what you need to know before you go.

  Umdloti Surf

  Umdloti is an exposed beach break backed by a series of reefs, with a right-hand point break, working best on offshore westerly winds and a south or south-east swell. June is rated the most consistent month for clean waves, and the break is rarely crowded compared with the more built-up North Coast spots.

  Fishing at Umdloti

  Umdloti is rated among the better recreational fishing spots on the KZN North Coast, worked from the shore, by ski-boat and from kayaks or paddle-skis. Target species range from couta and dorado to kingfish and rock cod, and the sardine run, May to July, adds extra activity.

  Kitesurfing at Umdloti

  Umdloti is a recognised North Coast kitesurfing and windsurfing spot, at its best from September to April with steady NNE to south-westerly winds averaging 10 to 25 knots. The river-mouth lagoon offers flat water alongside the wave-riding done off the main beach.

  Selection Beach, Umdloti

  Selection Beach is the quieter stretch of Umdloti's coast, one of three named beach spots alongside the main beach and the tidal pool. One listing calls it dog friendly and wheelchair accessible, though neither is confirmed. It sits inside the same shark-netted stretch as the main beach, for a quieter walk on the sand.

  Umdloti Beach

  Umdloti Beach is the village's main swimming beach, where the Mdloti River meets the sea, about 14 minutes from King Shaka Airport. Water quality has swung in the past, so check the week's municipal reading before you swim. It is shark-netted, with lifeguards in peak season, the tidal pool at its south end and beachfront cafes a short walk from the sand.

  Umdloti Tidal Pool

  Umdloti’s tidal pool is a natural rock pool at the south end of the main beach, and the spot most visitors build their beach day around. Check the tide, local notices and lifeguard advice before you get in, since conditions and water quality change. At low tide the rocks are worth exploring, and dolphins are a regular sighting from here.

  Umdloti Lagoon and River Estuary

  The Umdloti River forms a wide, sheltered lagoon at its mouth when it breaks through to the sea after rain. It is mangrove-lined, with resident fish eagles and waterfowl. Nobody hires out boards or boats here, and it is unpatrolled.

  Whales and Dolphins at Umdloti

  Dolphins are a common year-round sighting off Umdloti's coast, and whale season runs roughly July to November as southern right and humpback whales pass on their KZN migration. No boat is needed; the beach and tidal pool are both regular viewing spots.
