What to Pack for Umdloti

Pack for a subtropical coast, not for extremes. Sunscreen and a hat matter in every month; Umdloti’s sea temperature never drops below about 21C even in the coolest months (June to August), so swimwear is a year-round item too, not just a summer one.

Rain is the one thing worth packing for whatever month you travel. January is the wettest month in the local climate record, around 140mm over 16 rain days, and July the driest, around 30mm over 4 days, but no month is fully dry, so a light rain layer earns its space in the bag regardless of season. Summer’s rain tends to fall as short, heavy afternoon showers rather than settling in for a full day, so it rarely rules out a beach day entirely.

Temperature swings are modest. Even winter (June to August) averages a high around 22-23C, mild enough that a light jacket or jersey covers most evenings; nothing heavier is generally needed. For the tidal pool specifically, reef shoes are worth packing: the rock floor is uneven and can be sharp, and bare feet make exploring the shallower rock-pool sections uncomfortable. Bring your own snorkel gear if you want to use it at the pool, since none was confirmed available for hire locally.
