A beach village 14 minutes from King Shaka airport, with a tidal pool for the kids, surf off the reef and whales offshore from July.

The water
The beach is shark netted, with nets about 400 m offshore, and the tidal pool next to it has its own lifeguard tower.
Whales pass between July and November. June is rated the most consistent month for surf.

Chapter three
The year
Umdloti is not the same place in June as it is in December. The ring shows the four windows that change what the water is for, with the month you are reading this in lit up.

Whales July to November
Southern right and humpback whales pass on their KwaZulu-Natal migration. No boat needed.

Sardine run May to July, peaking in June
Umdloti sits on the run’s northward path. It brings dolphins, sharks, gannets and gamefish with it.

Kitesurf September to April
Steady NNE to south-westerly wind averaging 10 to 25 knots, with flat water in the lagoon.

Holiday peak December and January, plus Easter
The busiest weeks of the year. Easter moves year to year, so it is not drawn on the ring.

About 44% clean conditions against 37% blown out, on reliable offshore westerlies.

Pick your day
Perfect day
One way to spend a whole day in Umdloti without the car: sunrise on the beach, coffee with a sea view, the tidal pool at low tide.
- Sunrise Umdloti Beach The beach faces east over the Indian Ocean, so the sun comes up out of the sea.
- From 06:30 Coffee at FOAM A small coffee shop on North Beach Road whose own Instagram claims 180° sea views.
- Low tide The tidal pool A natural rock pool at the south end of the main beach, with its own lifeguard tower.
- From 12:00 Lunch at Bel Punto A family-run Italian and seafood restaurant with a large terrace and uninterrupted ocean views, open from 12:00.
- Afternoon Walk to the lagoon Walk north along the sand to where the Mdloti River meets the sea: a mangrove-lined lagoon with resident fish eagles and waterfowl.

A family day that keeps the drives short: the tidal pool at low tide, breakfast where there is a kids menu.

Sunset
Umdloti faces east, so the sun sets behind the village, not over the sea.

- Sundowners Salt & Citrus Upstairs at Umdloti Beach Centre, overlooking the beach, and home to what its own Instagram calls the Umdloti Sundowner Club.
- Sunset Tyler’s, upstairs Inland at Marine Walk, Tyler’s own site offers sunset views from its upstairs venue.
- Dinner Tightline A seafood retailer by day and a seafood bar and grill by night, in the same centre, with its own cocktail bar.

Rainy day
A wet day planned stop by stop: coffee with an ocean view in the village, Reefside for a slow late morning and lunch.

- Late morning Reefside About 3 minutes up the M4 and built for a slow visit: design and furniture showrooms led by Weylandts.
- Lunch Ocean Basket Sibaya At Reefside, with its own kids menu.
- Afternoon Gateway’s cinemas Gateway Theatre of Shopping has an 18-screen Nu Metro cinema, over 380 shops and around 90 restaurants.

Surf

3 km of beach from the South Beach Road beachfront, past the tidal pool and the main beach, to the Mdloti river mouth and the lagoon. About 45 minutes each way at an easy 4 km an hour.

The long walk to Umhlanga
7 km of beach from Umdloti, past Sibaya, to the Umhlanga Rocks lighthouse. About 1 hour 45 minutes at an easy 4 km an hour. The Umhlanga River mouth is the one crossing: cross only when it is not flowing hard, and turn back if it is. Uber is active in the area for the ride back.
