Windsurfers, kiteboarders and stand up paddleboarders use Umdloti’s north side, away from the surf break off the main stretch of Umdloti Beach. For flat water, head to the river-mouth lagoon. When the Mdloti River mouth opens to the sea after rain, it forms a sheltered stretch that suits kiting, canoeing and paddleboarding, without the chop and current of the open beach. Which one you ride on the day depends on wind direction, swell and whether the lagoon mouth is open.

The wind here blows from NNE round to south-westerly, averaging 10 to 25 knots. September through April is rated the most consistent stretch of the year for kitesurfing. Safety

The open beach and surf zone off Umdloti sit inside the KZN Sharks Board’s netted area, with nets roughly 400 m offshore. Ride further out, or in and around the lagoon mouth, and you can end up outside that zone. Treat open water beyond the net line as you would anywhere else on this coast.
