Guide
Umdloti in December
Updated · Sources
In short
December is Umdloti at its warmest and busiest: a sea around 24C, long days, and the tidal pool and beachfront restaurants a short walk apart. It is peak season, so book accommodation early, avoid the heaviest N3 days if you are driving from Gauteng, and keep a plan for rainy afternoons, because December is also one of the wettest months.
The weather
Expect highs of about 27C and a sea of around 24C, among the warmest water of the year. December is also one of the wettest months, with about 101 mm of rain over roughly 15 days, so about one day in two brings some rain. The month-by-month detail and its sources are in Umdloti weather by month.
For the wet afternoons, the answer is to use the car: lunch and a spa treatment at Sala Beach House up the coast, or the cinema and shops at Gateway. Both are in the rainy-day section of things to do in Umdloti.
The dates that shape the month
Public schools break up on Wednesday 9 December 2026, the last school day for learners on the national calendar. The 10th and 11th are administration days for staff. Learners go back on Wednesday 13 January 2027. The gazetted calendar covers public schools, so check your own school’s last day.
| Public holiday | Date |
|---|---|
| Day of Reconciliation | Wednesday 16 December 2026 |
| Christmas Day | Friday 25 December 2026 |
| Day of Goodwill | Saturday 26 December 2026 |
| New Year’s Day | Friday 1 January 2027 |
Christmas and New Year both fall on a Friday this year, so each makes a natural long weekend. None of the holidays lands on a Sunday, which means no extra Monday off.
Getting here
Driving from Gauteng. The N3 runs 578 km from Johannesburg to Durban, and the whole trip to Umdloti is commonly quoted at six to eight hours with stops. Last year the N3 Toll Concession flagged 11 to 14 December, 19 to 21 December, 23 and 24 December, the days from 26 December, and 1 to 4 January as the heaviest. Its 2026 advisory will follow closer to the time. Leave outside those windows if you can, and leave early in the day if you cannot. More in getting to Umdloti.
Flying. King Shaka International Airport is 12.5 km and about 14 minutes from Umdloti. Nine car hire companies have desks there. See the closest beach to King Shaka Airport.
On the beach
Umdloti Beach is shark-netted, and December is peak season, when lifeguards are on duty. Swim between the flags. The tidal pool is the family spot: a natural rock pool on the beachfront. Check the tide and the lifeguards before the children go in, and keep the small ones within reach.
Bluebottles can wash up when north-easterly winds blow onshore. If one stings, lift off any tentacles, rinse with fresh water, then use a sting cream, aloe or vinegar, with ice for swelling. Tell the lifeguards if anyone reacts badly.
In the water
Kitesurf season runs from September to April, so December is inside it. The surf works on an offshore westerly. Dolphins are a year-round sighting from the sand. The whales have gone by December; their season runs roughly July to November, so a whale-watching trip belongs to a winter or spring visit.
Markets and what is on
The markets within half an hour keep running through the holidays. Ballito Farmers Market trades every Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 to 14:00, plus selected public holidays. Golden Hours in Durban North runs every Sunday. The Wonder Market in Umhlanga falls on Sunday 27 December, and The Musgrave Market in Durban trades every Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00. I Heart Market, now at Northlands Primary School in Durban North, runs on the first Saturday of the month, which makes 5 December, though check its Facebook page first. The Litchi Orchard in Umhlali says it is renovating and lists no market dates.
What’s on updates every Thursday with dated events along the north coast, and adds Christmas and New Year events as they are listed.
Umdloti or a bigger town?
Umhlanga has the promenade, the hotels and Gateway. Ballito is the bigger, more commercial town, with more shopping and more restaurants. Umdloti keeps its beachfront restaurants, main beach and tidal pool within a short walk of each other, which counts for a lot with small children in a busy month. Compare them properly in Umdloti vs Umhlanga, Umdloti vs Ballito for a holiday and Umdloti vs Salt Rock.
