Closest Beach to King Shaka Airport

In short

Four beaches sit within about 15 minutes of King Shaka International Airport by road: Umdloti, La Mercy, Westbrook and Casuarina, all on the coast either side of the airport. They are within three minutes of each other, so which comes first depends on where you are picked up. Umdloti is the one set up for a visit, with a tidal pool, shark nets, lifeguards in peak season and a strip of restaurants a short walk from the sand.

King Shaka International Airport sits at La Mercy, about 4 km from the Indian Ocean. Land there and you are a quarter of an hour from the sand.

The airport’s own website gives Umdloti as 12.5 km and about 14 minutes. Where your pickup starts moves every figure in this table by a kilometre or two. It does not change the shape of it: four beaches in about a quarter of an hour, three more in about twenty minutes, and Durban’s beachfront at around half an hour.

La Mercy is the nearest as the crow flies, about 4 km from the terminal. The roads loop out to the main routes and back to the coast, which is why it lands second on the list by road.

Why Umdloti, of the four

It has the things you want within a few minutes’ walk of each other.

  • The tidal pool. A natural rock pool on the beachfront, popular with families. Check the tide, the signs and the lifeguards before anyone gets in.
  • A netted, lifeguarded main beach. Shark nets are maintained offshore by the KZN Sharks Board, and lifeguards are on duty in peak season. Swim where they tell you to.
  • Somewhere to eat facing the sea. Bel Punto opens at 12:00 every day with a terrace over the ocean. SandBar runs from 11:00 to 22:00, about 20 m from the sand. Salt & Citrus does breakfast with a sea view, and FOAM pours coffee from 06:30.
  • Somewhere to stay. Beachfront apartments and guesthouses, if you would rather spend the first or last night of a trip beside the sea than beside a runway. See where to stay in Umdloti and two sea-facing guest stays.
