Low tide shows the most rock-pool life. The tide alone does not make the water safe to swim, so check the lifeguards and their flags. Times are predicted from an ocean tide model checked against Durban tide tables, usually within 10 minutes. Not for navigation.
Umdloti is rated among the better recreational fishing stretches on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. It suits you whether you cast from the rocks or launch a boat.
What it is and where
You can fish Umdloti from several angles. Shore, rock and surf angling are all popular straight off the beachfront and on the rockier sections near the tidal pool. With a ski-boat, kayak or paddle-ski you can work further offshore.
No charter or hire outfit runs from Umdloti itself. Surf Motel’s paddle-ski page describes the local fishing, though Surf Motel doesn’t offer it as a service (checked 12 October 2026). What you can catch
Out deeper, gamefish anglers chase couta, snoek, dorado, tuna and sailfish. King mackerel, sharks, kingfish and queenfish work the middle ground. Closer to shore and the rocks, you’re after spotted grunter, rock cod, kob and pompano. What’s realistic on the day comes down to the season, the water temperature and how recently a bait shoal has moved through.
Seasons
The sardine run is the big event for anglers here. It usually runs May to July and peaks around June. Umdloti sits on the run’s northward path from the Eastern Cape. The headline sardine-run destination is further south, but the predators the sardines draw, including gamefish, sharks and dolphins, move through this stretch too, and fishing can pick up noticeably in that window. Outside sardine season, fish to the general rhythm of the KZN North Coast. Umdloti has no known pattern of its own to plan around.
Safety
Sharks are a normal part of the sea on this coast, more so in sardine-run season when predators are more active. The KZN Sharks Board keeps nets roughly 400 m offshore to protect the swimming zone. They don’t keep anglers or boats away from fish. Beyond the nets, use ordinary open-water caution: check conditions and fish with someone else where you can. What to bring
Bring your own tackle and bait, because Umdloti has no known fishing-supply shop of its own. Pack sun protection for a full session on open water or exposed rock.
