Question

What Is Umdloti's Population?

Updated

Umdloti's permanent population is estimated at roughly 3,000, swelling up to tenfold over the December/January and Easter holiday peaks. The last formal figure, the 2011 census, counted 1,778 residents.

Umdloti’s estimated permanent population is roughly 3,000, according to multiple current sources including South African History Online and Devmco Realty’s own area profile. That number swells dramatically, up to tenfold, over the December to January and Easter holiday peaks, when the village’s substantial holiday-accommodation stock (LekkeSlaap alone lists 163 Umdloti listings) fills up with visitors.

The last formal, sourced count is the 2011 national census, which recorded a population of 1,778 across an area of 1.59 km², giving a density of 1,120 people per km². That census also recorded the area’s racial and language makeup at the time: White 76.7%, Black African 12.3%, Indian/Asian 8.5%, Coloured 2.2%; English 72.7% and Afrikaans 14.3% as the leading home languages. Those are 2011 figures and should be read as historical, not current.

We could not verify a ward-level Umdloti figure from the 2022 census; only an eThekwini metro-wide total (4,239,901 across 103 wards) surfaced in our research, which does not tell you anything specific about Umdloti’s own ward, Ward 58.

The gap between 2011’s 1,778 and today’s estimated 3,000 tracks with steady residential growth in Umdloti itself plus the adjoining Sibaya Precinct, which has added several thousand new residential units since its 2016 launch on land bordering the village, some of which count as Umdloti-adjacent even if not inside the historical village boundary.
