N2 Gantry Installation: Recurring Overnight Closures Continue
Updated · Sources
In short
SANRAL's overhead sign-gantry installation on the N2 between KwaMashu and Umdloti has caused recurring overnight closures through 2025 and into 2026, with the most recent confirmed notice dated 2 September 2026.
SANRAL’s N2 upgrade between KwaMashu and Umdloti, first reported publicly in 2022, remains an active project through 2025 and 2026, including overhead sign-gantry installation that requires periodic overnight closures. Confirmed closure dates include:
- 12-13 July 2025 (N2 northbound, KwaMashu-Umdloti interchanges)
- 11-12 July 2026 (N2 southbound, Umdloti to Mount Edgecombe interchange, 19:00 Saturday to 04:00 Sunday, for two overhead sign gantries)
- 18 August 2026, a further weekend closure on the Durban-King Shaka route
- 21-22 August 2026, the most recently confirmed overnight closure, on the N2 northbound between the Mount Edgecombe and Sibaya interchanges (22:00 Saturday to 02:00 Sunday), with lanes also restricted in both directions between the KwaMashu and Umdloti interchanges over that same weekend
This is an ongoing, recurring disruption, not a single dated event, which is why it is carried as an unresolved status item rather than a one-off news piece. As of this update (8 September 2026), no closure notice dated after 21-22 August 2026 has been confirmed in this research, but new closure notices should be expected to continue as the gantry-installation project proceeds. Check SANRAL’s own Stop-Over notices or eThekwini traffic alerts for the current week’s schedule before any overnight drive on this stretch.
The N2 gantry works sit alongside the separate M27 Upgrade Project (see the M4 six-hour closure entry). Both are part of a broader wave of road infrastructure investment tied to Sibaya’s growth and to standard SANRAL signage-modernisation work on this section of the N2.
