In short
The M4 closed at the M27 interchange near Umdloti from 9am to 3pm on Tuesday 13 October 2026, a day later than first planned, so crews could place temporary staging beams for the bridge widening. Traffic was diverted via the existing on- and off-ramps.
The M4 closed at the M27 interchange near Umdloti from 9am to 3pm on Tuesday 13 October 2026. The Sibaya precinct manager said the closure was first set for Monday 12 October and moved to the Tuesday. Crews used the window to place temporary staging beams for the M4/M27 interchange bridge widening.
Traffic was diverted via the existing interchange on- and off-ramps, with signs and traffic control staff in place.
Reports differ on which road was shut. The precinct manager called it a full closure of the M4 at the M27 interchange. The Witness and East Coast Radio, quoting KZN Transport, described it as an M27 closure between Umdloti and the N2. The Witness reported that the M27 upgrade will widen the road to two lanes in each direction, and that KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said the work was needed for road safety where construction takes place above a bridge.
A similar six-hour closure took place on 2 September 2026; see the earlier item. For anything current, check the status page.
