Umdloti Beachfront Staircase Repairs Begin After R110,000 Community Fundraiser

In short
Beachfront promenade fencing and collapsing staircase repairs began in mid-April 2026, funded by a R110,000 community fundraiser run through the March 2026 Balwin Sport Dolphin Coast Half Marathon.
From mid-April 2026, repairs began on Umdloti’s dilapidated promenade fencing and collapsing beach staircases, worn down by salt-air corrosion and repeated vehicle-bumper damage. The work was funded by a R110,000 community fundraiser run by Vicky Schnetler, Umdloti Smart Village’s precinct manager, through the March 2026 Balwin Sport Dolphin Coast Half Marathon.
The scope included rebuilding the car-park-to-beach staircase in brick and mortar, and replacing the warped staircase in front of Donnax Sierra, which had previously caused a beachgoer’s broken leg, with weather-resistant materials.
This is a grassroots infrastructure story: a community fundraiser fixed a public-safety hazard the municipality had not addressed on its own. It was organised through the same Smart Village precinct-management body that also runs security patrols and civic advocacy against the Sibaya amendments.
If you use the beachfront staircases, note that repair work of this kind can mean partial access restrictions at times. Check /status for any current notice before a beach visit that depends on a specific access point.
