Sweetwater Stream Vegetation Clearing Stirs Debate Over Umdloti Road Widening
Updated · Sources
In short
Vegetation clearing near the Sweetwater Stream for the M27/M4 entry-road widening into Umdloti began 6 February 2026, prompting a community meeting on 13 February 2026 with Devmco's ecological consultant.
Earthmoving machinery began clearing vegetation near the Sweetwater Stream on 6 February 2026, part of the M27/M4 entry-road widening into Umdloti, funded by Devmco Group as part of the wider upgrade around the village. The clearing, near a wetland-fed stream, triggered community pushback.
A community meeting followed on 13 February 2026 with Devmco’s ecological consultant, Dr Allister Starke, who said the cleared area was within an approved road reserve and was “not virgin habitat, but a pre-disturbed system.” Devmco said engagement with Umdloti Smart Village and the Umdloti Conservancy was ongoing.
This is a smaller, more localised dispute than the Node 1/5 precinct-plan amendment fight running in parallel, but it draws on the same underlying tension. A fast-growing Sibaya development is pushing infrastructure works right up against Umdloti’s edges, with the village’s civic bodies acting as the main check on environmental and process concerns. The road-widening project itself is aimed at easing the very traffic pressure that Sibaya’s growth is creating.
