Four Central Durban Beaches Closed Under Court Order; Umdloti Tests Clean

Updated · Sources

In short

On 18-19 December 2025, eThekwini closed four central Durban beaches over E. coli contamination following a court order on sewage spillages. Umdloti was not among the closed beaches, though municipal readings in November 2025 had rated its water poor before independent tests in late December read clean.

On 18-19 December 2025, a Pietermaritzburg High Court ruling forced eThekwini Municipality to publish weekly E. coli test readings for its beaches and to act urgently on chronic sewage pollution, after a legal challenge over the issue. In the same window, eThekwini closed four central Durban beaches, Blue Lagoon, eThekwini Beach, Country Club Beach and Battery Beach, after pollution testing found E. coli contamination linked to sewage-infrastructure failures over the festive period.

Umdloti was not among the closed beaches, but its water was not clean all season. eThekwini’s own tests from 12 to 26 November 2025 rated all three Umdloti points (tidal area, main beach, Umdloti South) poor, at 571 to 638 cfu/100ml E. coli against the 500 threshold. Independent testing reported on 24 December 2025 put Umdloti Main Beach back in the ideal range. So Umdloti stayed open through the court-ordered closures, but on the strength of a late-December improvement, not a clean record. An earlier version of this site’s research wrongly implied Umdloti itself closed and reopened around 10 December 2025. That claim traced back to a Coast KZN article describing a reopening on “Saturday, December 10,” which is 2022, not 2025. Umdloti was not closed in December 2025.

That said, Umdloti’s own beaches did close over water-quality concerns in both 2021 and 2022, so this remains a live regional risk category, not a solved problem, and the December 2025 court order’s weekly-testing requirement is the mechanism this page tracks. This status entry is treated as resolved for the specific Dec 2025 incident since the closed beaches reopened once retested safe, but the underlying sewage-infrastructure question remains a standing regional concern worth monitoring.

See is Umdloti beach open today for the live-status framing of this same question.
