eThekwini Water-Supply Disruption Alerts Continue Into August 2026

On 6 August 2026, eThekwini councillor Samier Singh put a motion through July’s council meeting calling for formal, real-time water-outage alerts. The proposal is a ward-by-ward online dashboard covering water outages, electricity faults, planned maintenance and repair turnaround times. It comes amid ongoing regional water-supply disruptions that have recurred through 2025 and 2026, with named affected areas including Umlazi, Ensimbini, Folweni, Chatsworth, Verulam, Tongaat and Ntuzuma. The motion asked eThekwini’s Executive Committee to investigate feasibility and report back to council; as of this update, no dashboard had been confirmed as built or live.

The same window saw a concrete example of the underlying problem. From around 4 to 7 August 2026, two bursts on the 750mm Wiggins high-pressure main (Vusi Mzimela Road and Seaview) cut water to Woodlands, Bluff, Lamontville and Mobeni in the south of Durban. Repair crews worked through the night and completed the fix by 7 August 2026, with full reservoir recovery expected to take about a week longer. This incident was in the south of the metro, not the north coast.

No Umdloti-specific water outage was confirmed in this window. This item is included as a status entry, marked unresolved because the outage-alert dashboard has not been implemented, not because of evidence of a direct Umdloti incident. eThekwini’s water infrastructure has a documented history of flood damage in Umdloti specifically, most severely in the April 2022 KZN floods. The treatment works and access road were washed away and took roughly four months to repair.
