Wiggins Water Main Bursts, Cuts Supply to South Durban (Umdloti Unaffected)
Updated · Sources
In short
Two bursts on eThekwini's 750mm Wiggins high-pressure water main cut supply to Woodlands, Bluff, Lamontville and Mobeni from around 4 to 7 August 2026. The incident was in the south of Durban; no Umdloti-area outage was linked to it.
From around 4 to 7 August 2026, two bursts hit eThekwini’s 750mm-diameter Wiggins high-pressure water main, along Vusi Mzimela Road and a second in Seaview. The bursts cut supply to Woodlands, Bluff, Lamontville and Mobeni in the south of Durban. Repair crews worked through the night on four leaks on the pipeline; the main fix was completed by 7 August 2026, with full reservoir recovery expected to take roughly a further week.
This incident was in the south of the eThekwini metro, not Umdloti or the north coast, and no Umdloti-area outage was linked to it. This incident is included as regional infrastructure context. It is the concrete event behind that week’s separate councillor motion for a formal water-outage alert system (see eThekwini water-supply disruption alerts). It also fits the established pattern of ageing bulk-water infrastructure across the municipality causing intermittent, localised outages.
This status entry is marked resolved because the specific Wiggins main bursts were repaired and supply restored to the affected south Durban suburbs. The underlying municipal water-infrastructure risk remains a live, ongoing concern rather than a solved problem; see /status for the current picture across beach, water, roads and power.
