Tongaat Hulett's Business-Rescue Exit Finalised
Updated · Sources
In short
Tongaat Hulett's corporate business-rescue process concluded on 14 June 2026 with a settlement in the Durban High Court. Vision Sugar Group and South Africa's IDC emerged as controlling parties. This concerns Tongaat's sugar business, not the Sibaya land.
On 14 June 2026, Tongaat Hulett’s long-running corporate business-rescue saga concluded with a comprehensive settlement finalised at the eleventh hour in the Durban High Court. The liquidation application was withdrawn, and Vision Sugar Group (Robert Gumede and Ruto Moyo, having bought roughly R9 billion face-value lender debt for about R3.2 billion in May 2025) emerged as controlling creditor. South Africa’s IDC funded part of the takeover for a 40% stake.
This is important context for anyone following the Umdloti and Sibaya story, but it is easy to misread. This settlement covers Tongaat’s sugar and agricultural business rescue. It is not a transaction over the Sibaya Precinct land itself. The property side has been separately controlled since November 2024, when Devmco Group was confirmed as Sibaya’s master developer, having taken over precinct leadership from Tongaat’s now-closed real-estate development division. Do not conflate the two; Devmco’s development plans for Sibaya are unaffected by this sugar-business settlement.
For the land and development story that actually shapes Umdloti’s future, see the Sibaya Precinct pillar.
